Seven Card Stud Tips

Seven Card Stud is a really fun game to play, and even if you are a newer poker player, you’ll have no trouble learning the basic rules of the game. However, even the most seasoned can benefit from tips about the game. Some of the tips that we have discovered are mentioned below in hopes that they will help you improve your game.

If you are dealt a high pair early in the game, it’s a good idea to go ahead and raise to weed out the weaker hands and/or get rid of as many players as possible before the game gets to far along. However, if you start out with a draw hand, either a straight or flush draw, bet conservatively to help build the pot up a little and so you can judge the other players’ hands.

We suggest that, if you are lucky enough to be dealt three of a kind at the beginning of the game, you play on the conservative side until 5th Street. This keeps other players guessing, and adding to the pot that you are likely to win later on. Another helpful tip is to fold on a possible low straight or flush. This hand is not worth the risk because of the high potential that it will be beaten.

Unless it is hidden or you are able to use your down card to beat the hands that are showing, it is a good idea to fold on a small beginning pair. However, if your down card makes your hand beat the other hands showing, keep playing for at least a couple of rounds so you can better evaluate the situation. At the same time, be aware that the other players can be hiding a paired down card, so if you see that another player has high cards or a higher pair than you have, you might consider folding because of the possibility of a high pair or even three of a kind.

Always keep a close watch on the other players up cards. If you see any cards that could lower the chance of you getting the hand you need, or you see a hand showing that out and out beats your hand, fold. Unless you are playing a very strong draw hand, your best bet in this scenario is to fold. Always be on the look out for strong reasons to fold. That way, if you can’t see any reasons showing that you should fold, you know that you can continue aggressively.

A good tip for any game is to watch the other players closely, especially if you have already folded for the round. Find out what “Tells” they may have, if they are aggressive or passive, if they bluff, and any other things that will help you to beat the other players.
Finally, get caught bluffing every now and then - keep the other players guessing as much as you can by varying the way you play. This will keep them more occupied with trying to figure out how to play against you and you can catch them in mistakes more often.
